Emilly has been having more adventures with the supernatural and technology courtesy of the wonderful world of Virtual Reality and a mysterious woman in black....<br />
<br />
If you'd like to explore, then you can best experience this new adventure via a VR headset (like google cardboard) into which your smart phone will slot. You can buy headsets for as little as £8 on <a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cardboard-Inspired-SainSonic-Compatible-magnetic/dp/B01DKXA83C/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1468438896&sr=1-2-spons&keywords=google+cardboard&psc=1">Amazon</a>!<br />
<br />
Then just download the Splash App from the store and look for the user name "DreamsInc" - that's me!<br />
Part one of the adventure is called "the dark lady"<br />
Splash is kind of like 360, VR instagram - try it, you'll love it....<br />
<br />
If you really can't do the immersive experience, you can still view it - downloading the Splash app, then just sliding your finger on the screen to look around, or preview it here on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/weareZINDIQ/?pnref=story">facebook....</a><br />
We've had over 7000 views already!<br />
I'm going to keep adding to the story throughout the summer - so come follow DreamsInc and enjoy!<br />
<br />
If you have a Victorian style Stereoscope then you can save these lovely still images and print them out for your spooky 3D viewing pleasure... It's not quite the whole immersive experience, but if it was good enough for the Victorians....<br />

When I awoke this morning Dan Hare and Digby were playing with a tin of cookie cutters. By Playing, I mean, they had knocked it off the table and hurled the contents all over the floor, they were having a lovely time grabbing and banging and throwing them around.<br />
<br />
Sigh.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiojRLK20F4uqNuIDvriVyCpbMKExAJwNy_KyJt0-M7sXBdSbgtZ91JfUv98-jDsqvKbhlb7V6qwme0jkFFeCMIzzmrFvtE0bQTAX-DDXirZkSISk6eMnZmO49YPVVSfFZMvM84pzRUwQIx/s1600/IMG_8723.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiojRLK20F4uqNuIDvriVyCpbMKExAJwNy_KyJt0-M7sXBdSbgtZ91JfUv98-jDsqvKbhlb7V6qwme0jkFFeCMIzzmrFvtE0bQTAX-DDXirZkSISk6eMnZmO49YPVVSfFZMvM84pzRUwQIx/s1600/IMG_8723.JPG" height="200" width="150" /></a>I took this as a hint that a little springtime baking was in order and decided to create some cupcakes.<br />
<br />
Inspired by a box of delicious raspberry and popping candy truffles from <a href="http://montybojangles.com/">Monty Bojangles</a> I decided to play with a raspberry ripple cake hiding a truffle inside each one!<br />
<br />

<br />
Oven temperature 200 degrees C<br />
makes 8 large cup cakes<br />

<br />
Mix in 120g of self raising flour, two eggs and 2 tablespoons of sieved raspberries.<br />
<br />
Swirl an extra 2 tablespoons of puree through to make a raspberry ripple effect.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwRmIHb4ixeD2Bp27XH6V1YGTtE8IfIvp4D6vAP_8ly6pZTmisV-kFX_0P-G7HC4YeOHFEuJzJIOGVfZGOXAbJacA5GQgUxnCjnRMf7GXZVfMUd8hLT3W7kU2XXtU9Qb-BlljEReqcfJk4/s1600/IMG_8728.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwRmIHb4ixeD2Bp27XH6V1YGTtE8IfIvp4D6vAP_8ly6pZTmisV-kFX_0P-G7HC4YeOHFEuJzJIOGVfZGOXAbJacA5GQgUxnCjnRMf7GXZVfMUd8hLT3W7kU2XXtU9Qb-BlljEReqcfJk4/s1600/IMG_8728.JPG" height="200" width="150" /></a><br />
Fill the cake cases half full, add a truffle in the center of each one and cover with another spoonfull of mixture.<br />
<br />
Bake for 10-12 minutes and cool on a wire tray.<br />

These are best eaten while still slightly warm with a nice cup of tea and truffles on the side<br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The designer creates a BLAD (Book Layout And Design) for everyone in the team to look at and comment on, usually just of one project and a front and back cover. then after discussion/reworking of the design, the rest of the book is laid out, pages numbered and a first copy printed on flat paper.This design process can take 2-4 months depending on other book commitments at the publishing house and simplicity or otherwise of the design. Mine are quite complex obviously and I like to give the designer loads of reference material and ideas to make sure they know whats in my mind straight off.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">I've learned pretty much everything I know from books, so I find it terribly exciting that I'm now in a position to be comissioned to create my own. It takes very long time to make a quality how-to book, so I thought you might like to see how the process works! </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: large;">I am a very hands on author, I like to have input into the final design and layout to ensure that my books have the right old world vintage feel to them. It's very unusual for an author to be allowed to do this and I'm very grateful the publishers trust my vision enough to let me guide the visuals. I'm sure this makes me a nightmare for the layout artists but they always rise to the challenge and create beautiful work, as I'm sure you agree! </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> Each book starts with my pitch to a specific publishing house, it's usually compact, just two sides of A4 with the books overall concept, my artistic and book writing credentials, who the book is aimed at and a list of the rough idea for chapters and projects to be included. I have to do this for each new book I suggest, and I may suggest 3 or 4 different concepts to several publishing houses before a<span style="font-size: large;"> comissioning</span> editor sees one they think will sell. Obviously as a freelance writer this is all unpaid work.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-size: large;">Once a publisher has spotted something they like, they will put it forward at a publishers meeting. If everyone agrees it's a great idea then it will go forward to the next shortlist meeting, if they don't, it's back to the drawing board for me, sending out more ideas or trying a different company! </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">If they like it they will ask for a more detailed breakdown of the proposed book, this will have more descriptions of each project, maybe some moodboard visuals just to get the visual concepts across. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The publishers will have another meeting at this point, often with the sales team to see if it fits with their book list and outlets, maybe talk about slightly different angles or projects too. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">To get a proposal up to this point can take anything between three months to a year and if the sales team dont like it or someone decides its not quite right, the idea can still be rejected at this point.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">If everyone likes it, hooray! I'll be offered a contract with the royalty</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOPVdi9AYAoKi4_quywIjvhm0xZ_kuG7xzRt8LujfXxzv3rhPFp3Gw9tENLVYq65sIoaZ-9_3YHB5W01fLhoVvMYJyV1WOxyhzCCJqg-LJOXZ9HHCaKc4JEr5F29a_95P-6bv_tEHsdEXP/s1600/proposal+page2+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOPVdi9AYAoKi4_quywIjvhm0xZ_kuG7xzRt8LujfXxzv3rhPFp3Gw9tENLVYq65sIoaZ-9_3YHB5W01fLhoVvMYJyV1WOxyhzCCJqg-LJOXZ9HHCaKc4JEr5F29a_95P-6bv_tEHsdEXP/s320/proposal+page2+copy.jpg" width="225" /></a>percentage, lots of legal details and the "advance" (which has to be paid back from any sales before I start earning royalties) as well as the deadline schedule. The deadlines are usually between three and six months, so from here on I go from 0 to 90 miles per hour in a frenzy of writing, photographing and making!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The fun can begin! I draw sketches and notes for each project, then start to make each one up, photographing it step by step myself in my little photo studio which has been especially designed for this work. I use a light tent and two small daylight photographic lights and a Fuji Finepix bridge camera on a tripod. I often have to use a self timer because obviously I need both my hands to hold or demonstrate the technique I'm using!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgilo3jnR3jX7fM6DPnAIdx0fK2QAR4AoK-P35abgJ6M19V8nXCUSv0dbnodcX2zGGfoqBNUWboCWb52nq91msBX1NLaVZmatb26KC9XM4Npg37ykN7zNoaavbWdT-cY1IvfzXkRYG4VTV/s1600/steambook0003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgilo3jnR3jX7fM6DPnAIdx0fK2QAR4AoK-P35abgJ6M19V8nXCUSv0dbnodcX2zGGfoqBNUWboCWb52nq91msBX1NLaVZmatb26KC9XM4Npg37ykN7zNoaavbWdT-cY1IvfzXkRYG4VTV/s200/steambook0003.JPG" width="200" /></a>Sometimes something doesn't work the way I thought it would, and I have to retrace and rephotograph a project, or a few steps too, this is just part of the process and I've made some truly spectacular mistakes sometimes, but hey it's good, because then I can give all the helpful tips of how not to do things as well as how to! I write all the steps up as I go along in huge detail, then simplify into more understandable methods for my readers afterwards...</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Parallell to writing the projects during the week, at the weekends I'll be dressing up and photographing the models for the intro stories, this is always epic fun, and a nice chance to see my friends and be silly. We joke that if you come for a visit and stand still long enough in my studio, you<span style="font-size: large;"> are bound to</span> be dressed up and photographed!</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0AHht9rOwj49XlMD-ohz9UIpWeC3uLyU-3jYsh_PaznmFafFYzImGAFZTlZLm2Rod_QAnmYFGBDRcHZE8rgFPmb4oDdQ9q7arCBzth9BhX6kcf_N66yqL_ExhAAOkf5m4e6TiihxbCdyK/s1600/clockwork+doll.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="160" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0AHht9rOwj49XlMD-ohz9UIpWeC3uLyU-3jYsh_PaznmFafFYzImGAFZTlZLm2Rod_QAnmYFGBDRcHZE8rgFPmb4oDdQ9q7arCBzth9BhX6kcf_N66yqL_ExhAAOkf5m4e6TiihxbCdyK/s400/clockwork+doll.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">They are photographed against a plain wall or back drop, then one of my pet digital artists, like <a href="http://www.julianholtom.com/">Julian </a>for Steampunk Emporium or <a href="http://to-a-tdesigns.blogspot.co.uk/">Terry</a> for Teaparty and Apothecary can be getting on and creating a beautiful fantastical background from my notes and sketchups, making a beautiful picture for the chapter openings.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Once all the projects are photographed and written up into steps, I can start on the int<span style="font-size: large;">r</span>o stories, I love writing these whimsy pieces, this is the bit that feels like pure fun rather than work! They are inspired primarily from the actual object and then sometimes by friends or conversations in the steampunk community too.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Finally I have a finished manuscript and the step by step photos. Time to double check, triple check, edit and rewrite before submitting it to the Publishers!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">(to be continued in part 2 next week, so do check back then!) </span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">For you hardy adventurers who have not come across this delicious fruit, it is an almost citrus type flavour, the seed pod of the tamarind tree, originating in Africa, and now growing in many tropical and subtropical climes </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://caribbeanpot.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/tamarind-sauce.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="http://caribbeanpot.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/tamarind-sauce.jpg" border="0" class="decoded" height="150" src="http://caribbeanpot.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/tamarind-sauce.jpg" width="200" /></a>It is often sold as a paste or syrup, I buy it as a slightly dried and compacted block of pulp, which you can then cut chunks off, add a little boiling water to and pass through a sieve to make your own fresh pulp, it's cheaper and lasts longer if you purchase it that way. It adds a glorious check sucking sour edge to many chinese and indian dishes. you could use it in place of lime or lemon juice, though it has a very unique flavour all it's own....</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">As all adventurers need to get used to local delicacies, with no thought of personal danger, I have been experimenting with a cocktail for you!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.sukamtradingcompany.com/full-images/whole-tamarind-819947.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="http://www.sukamtradingcompany.com/full-images/whole-tamarind-819947.jpg" border="0" class="decoded" height="150" src="http://www.sukamtradingcompany.com/full-images/whole-tamarind-819947.jpg" width="200" /></a>2 measures Hendricks gin</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">1 tablespoon tamarind syrup</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The juice of a fresly squeezed blood orange </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Shake over ice and pour into a chilled glass with a couple more ice cubes and a twist of lime peel for garnish, you can top up with plain soda or tonic water for a longer drink.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRx21WUndH_yHs-SiDjDziyraw2iFvGSsXijMONO1lhrl6KUd7kFa8p8M0VzgwvMSjE5EFPRQcOIYdoxHxmMvbVehv-H-f3GcnMI3fK3suCHD32lDOfMBHcnNAz-4LhZhSR92tud8ca8Sv/s1600/cheers!.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRx21WUndH_yHs-SiDjDziyraw2iFvGSsXijMONO1lhrl6KUd7kFa8p8M0VzgwvMSjE5EFPRQcOIYdoxHxmMvbVehv-H-f3GcnMI3fK3suCHD32lDOfMBHcnNAz-4LhZhSR92tud8ca8Sv/s200/cheers!.jpg" width="149" /></a>To make the syrup, mix 1/2 cup sugar with 1/2 cup of water and boil for three minutes. add 1 tablespoon of tamarind paste or sieved pulp and mix well, removing from the heat and bottling when cool.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Drink with style!</span><br />

<br />
He makes marvellous things in his sheds (note I say Sheds plural) and one of his latest constructions is a Pantograph.<br />
<br />
This is not actually a machine for creating frilly bloomers,oh no. It is a very clever mechanism designed for creating exact copies. It was first used in 1603 to copy diagrams and plans accurately.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipie-LrYIMuM0U9O_tkh15v_i5sXg37W7ZrXyTR35kirIOXhXo-IxVwRAyb60MDGikevNwhwcsJK6GGB9gjd7GQYb0rQmKIuf-rWh13XyoDtlAQE221LwZgDtUTT3wk2JlSStiu-3YUZuV/s1600/232.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipie-LrYIMuM0U9O_tkh15v_i5sXg37W7ZrXyTR35kirIOXhXo-IxVwRAyb60MDGikevNwhwcsJK6GGB9gjd7GQYb0rQmKIuf-rWh13XyoDtlAQE221LwZgDtUTT3wk2JlSStiu-3YUZuV/s200/232.JPG" width="149" /></a></div>
Chief Engineers machine has been designed to use a fine tipped router to carve an exact copy from a three dimonsional original, reducing the carved design by a 2:1 ratio. This means that from one original model he can create any number of exact half sized replicas.<br />
<br />
So, he created me a gorgeous gearwheel shortbread cookie biscuit mould!<br />
<br />
It is carved in mahogany and is a beautiful object in its own right. while it can also be used to mould fondant icing, or marzipan, I wanted to test it's cogs upon some biscuit dough....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4F6IcN8Ew2NWoyTFKmmjxrl88XB6kt7S6kaWRGTBHx6XywBLpcLx2m2oGGfYfErijaHPjlsTNX3HvxYEtjT9WvEXwkZoMfPeDtJY6ongVMJvO5WfIyhuJ1FNhFUnFxr9on3CYvvlhlrbf/s1600/274.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4F6IcN8Ew2NWoyTFKmmjxrl88XB6kt7S6kaWRGTBHx6XywBLpcLx2m2oGGfYfErijaHPjlsTNX3HvxYEtjT9WvEXwkZoMfPeDtJY6ongVMJvO5WfIyhuJ1FNhFUnFxr9on3CYvvlhlrbf/s200/274.JPG" width="149" /></a></div>
This is my recipe, it is very delicious but because it's quite buttery the gear wheels do spread slightly when baked....<br />
<br />
125g butter<br />
40g caster sugar<br />
20g rice flour<br />
170g plain flour<br />
1 dessert spoon powdered cinnamon <br />
<br />
preheat the oven to 150degrees C<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Whilst thinking about cocktail cabinets and the dificulty of getting to the bar at a crowded soiree, I came up with the idea of a bustle that concealed a hidden drinks cabinet!<br />
<br />
The construction of the outfit is described in detail <a href="http://sparklyjem.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/bustle">here</a> and you can also see me talking about it in a video for <a href="http://www.themuse.tv/2012/11/gothic-glam-steampunk-fashion-part-2/">TheMuseTV</a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
The actual gown has been featured in a few different exhibitions and books now, and it is so much fun to wear, it always turns heads....</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiTCr3omhc0_lsxj0-RmKeC8CKBVHEKxmt0uDl8gHbBBWq7s4PIBEwAdWf4wnPofuuowspkN5vG9r1lFOYp3D9S1Trb7uWxoFWwt90v3PiItF3QrJgu-NJGNWAwYlZDfk5ZEXM_Z-s1xw3/s1600/gown+bustle+open.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiTCr3omhc0_lsxj0-RmKeC8CKBVHEKxmt0uDl8gHbBBWq7s4PIBEwAdWf4wnPofuuowspkN5vG9r1lFOYp3D9S1Trb7uWxoFWwt90v3PiItF3QrJgu-NJGNWAwYlZDfk5ZEXM_Z-s1xw3/s200/gown+bustle+open.jpg" width="150" /></a> It features a quite traditionally victorian cuirasse bodice pattern cut, unboned but worn over a steel boned corset, with a velvet front panel and sumptuous peacock patterned satin sleeves. The actual bar is made from buckram and is rigid enough to support cocktail shaker, hendricks gin bottle and is lit from above with white LED's. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The bustle swag is created from a piece of Saree fabric which drapes much like a venetian blind over the rigid bar structure. when a tassel is pulled the swag swishes apart and upwards like theatre curtains to reveal the bar!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8Ls-T0-09XaCOzNFIgD8cVrN3qJocDXGRK3Sl2ePURa5UluuIA7FU8kzTCg_ZDdMiGCRdD2adXeOH9VOmS7px_uqulW08xklQI8PqO5aYV1Z6PJYhQAbOSOyx48O4XmlaJYTT_0ExDvK4/s1600/gown+side.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8Ls-T0-09XaCOzNFIgD8cVrN3qJocDXGRK3Sl2ePURa5UluuIA7FU8kzTCg_ZDdMiGCRdD2adXeOH9VOmS7px_uqulW08xklQI8PqO5aYV1Z6PJYhQAbOSOyx48O4XmlaJYTT_0ExDvK4/s200/gown+side.jpg" width="150" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It is quite heavy when the bar is fully stocked and also because it's rigid (unlike most of my other costumes collapsable bustles) it's not the greatest thing to sit down in!</div>

As part of ‘The Next Big Thing Blog Hop’, I was tagged by author of "How to bag a Jabbawock- a victorian monster hunters guide" <a href="https://www.facebook.com/KitCoxAuthor?">Mr Kit Cox</a> esq last week. Kits book is a splendid romp of an instruction manual with diagrams, photographs (yes photographs) and annecdotes on a variety of historic creatures and monsters complete with very gory descriptions of how to dispatch them!<br />
<br />
The purpose of these posts is to introduce you to writers and their<b> w</b>ork, hopefully including some you haven’t heard of, whether a new release or a Work in Progress (WIP).<br />
<br />
According to the rules, I will be answering some questions
(the same ones for every other blog hopper) and I have some authors to nominate to continue the Hop! Some may already have been tagged but that's no reason not to go and check out their work again!<br />
<br />
This is a bit weird for me because I don't know many authors, as I don't go to writers groups or indeed read many blogs (hangs head in shame) I mainly read classic fiction and all those authors are no longer writing blogs....however these are a selection of cracking writers all of whom have connections of one sort or another with my mad fantasy/historical/steampunk world!<br />
<br />
<b><a href="http://liahabel.com/blog/">Lia Habel </a> </b><br />
<b>Dark future/victorian/zombie romance trilogy, think frocks, fights and a hearthrob undead hero</b><br />
<b><a href="http://magdaknight.com/">Magda Knight </a></b><br />
<b>Young adult fiction with a fantasy/mythological twist. Witty, topical and thoughtful.</b><br />
<b><a href="http://fidelismorgan.net/">Fidelis Morgan</a></b><br />
<b>Restoration mystery romps, fun, fast and frivolous, my copies are falling apart.</b><br />
<b> <a href="http://janineashbless.blogspot.co.uk/">Janine Ashbless</a> </b><br />
<b>Well written erotic fiction, with a fantasy/history flavour... definitely not "work safe"... no really, not even her blog...</b><br />
<b><a href="http://philipreeve.blogspot.co.uk/">Philip Reeve</a></b><br />
<b>Young adult fantasy/history/steampunk adventures. quite possibly my favourite living author...</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<br />
<i>1)What is the working title of your next book?</i><br />
<br />
The next to be published will be "Steampunk Apothecary" although I have two books out next year (2013) "Steampunk Teaparty" will follow soon after....<br />
<i><b> </b> </i><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5DpQs49ZWVu7PGAvLN9-8RsuF_rnOqXlXh6mGFSgAi0Wsq5g67R04SVZVF9LVg3NVQDOZQOtEEAPDqd4lGFFRhw85_AHW2C4YLPj5Ojt4sSS7iphSZ9ojBEtN1e7xUz53EY74MCqIfGYb/s1600/jem+sample+page.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5DpQs49ZWVu7PGAvLN9-8RsuF_rnOqXlXh6mGFSgAi0Wsq5g67R04SVZVF9LVg3NVQDOZQOtEEAPDqd4lGFFRhw85_AHW2C4YLPj5Ojt4sSS7iphSZ9ojBEtN1e7xUz53EY74MCqIfGYb/s200/jem+sample+page.jpg" width="144" /></a>2) <i>Where did the idea come from for the book?</i><br />
<br />
It is a sequal of sorts to "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Steampunk-Emporium-Creating-Fantastical-Oddments/dp/1440308381">Steampunk Emporium</a>" so I wanted to continue Emilly and Mr Woppits adventures but also add something new to the experience and projects. I opted for a darker and more fairytale theme this time round, it really seemed to fit well with the alice in wonderland victorian sinister whimsy. Which is how I like my steampunk.<br />
<br />
I'd wanted to do a fairytale jewellery project book for years but publishers kept stealing my idea, giving it to someone else, having it done badly, the book not selling, then rejecting my proposal again because "we've done that- it didn't sell" so a large part of me is going "squeeeeeeeeeeeee! at last!!!!"<i><br /></i><br />
<br />
3) <i>What genre does your book fall under?</i><br />
<br />
Arts and Crafts. My book is a how to make jewellery and accessories book, with added stories and art.<br />
<br />
<i>4 What actors would you choose to play the part of your characters in a movie rendition?</i><br />
<br />
This is a bit of an odd question for me, because it's a project how-to book although I do have a main character for the stories, Emilly ladybird is very much my own alter ego, and i use all the models for the photographs as my inspirations for the stories...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoz3Mh1KybObfoWW3jHGHBAuND7wSfkAEDE3uFT4K_GEPFNtuE2dZpTz4T9GmbQ7NJVMR7AmsAPOOip0LX0C-IaAnacIUTj2BUkzyXjiYd69Pk7bN4uMaBNw2_y43zRzkbbgceiPrXtBBz/s1600/christina_hendricks--300x300.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoz3Mh1KybObfoWW3jHGHBAuND7wSfkAEDE3uFT4K_GEPFNtuE2dZpTz4T9GmbQ7NJVMR7AmsAPOOip0LX0C-IaAnacIUTj2BUkzyXjiYd69Pk7bN4uMaBNw2_y43zRzkbbgceiPrXtBBz/s200/christina_hendricks--300x300.jpg" width="199" /></a></div>
If we are playing fantasy football though, I'd like Sir Ian Mc Kellan and Derek Jacobi to play Dickens and Rivett and Christina Hendricks could do a fun Emilly...<br />
<i> </i> <br />
5) <i>What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?</i><br />
<br />
<div>
"Fairies, Airships and Adventure,</div>
Making magical steampunk jewellery and accessories"<br />
<br />
6) <i>Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?</i><br />
<br />
It has been comissioned by a large craftbook publishing house.<br />
<i> </i> <br />
7) <i>How long did it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript?</i><br />
<br />
It takes about a month to get the rough outline of the book together, then another two to make all the projects and do the step by step photography, then about six months of to-ing and fro-ing between me and the publishers to arrange the art direction/beauty photography/layout etc.<br />
<br />
8) <i>What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?</i><br />
<br />
Well the little stories are very much light whimsy like Philip Reeves larklight trilogy, or perhaps Joan Aikens stories, but as it's a craft book as well I'd say theres not much like it out there to be honest! perhaps Enchanted Adornments by Green Girl studios?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid6l1mzTRKmoshkmeMNVYu5cmYVmgvaozTpVyhP0jXEkPTgn0oiSb-V-AwyvQgYyH-TLpObNPyeOORU4kfscq2smaR1pPUzQGoswv_tyKnchxLBrtl9L81JoSsE9FZZ83JzPhCxnfyBlwo/s1600/Nicholette_1718_v1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid6l1mzTRKmoshkmeMNVYu5cmYVmgvaozTpVyhP0jXEkPTgn0oiSb-V-AwyvQgYyH-TLpObNPyeOORU4kfscq2smaR1pPUzQGoswv_tyKnchxLBrtl9L81JoSsE9FZZ83JzPhCxnfyBlwo/s200/Nicholette_1718_v1.jpg" width="143" /></a></div>
9) <i>Who or what inspired you to write this book?</i><br />
<br />
I love making beautiful things and I wanted to carry on being able to pay the mortgage while I did so! My creative friends and the people I meet at Steampunk conventions are a huge inspiration too.<br />
<br />
10) <i>What else about the book might pique the reader's interest?</i><br />
<br />
Think of it as an introduction to a fabulous fantasy world of Steampunk, If you don't make things you'll enjoy the stories, if you don't read stories you'll enjoy the projects! and if you don't know what Steampunk is then Im pretty sure it's time you found out! <br />

I won an award!!!! I still can't quite believe it, but "Steampunk Emporium" was voted the best non fiction steampunk book of 2011/12. I am so thrilled to have won, a huge thankyou to everyone who voted. It genuinely was most unexpected.<br />
<br />
Sowhat a terribly exciting and busy weekend that was!<br />
It went
by in a flash and I know I didn't get to see a quarter of the things I'd
intended to, or indeed the people I'd have loved to chat with, but It
was jolly good fun anyway. <br />

I hope you all enjoyed seeing the sneaky previews of the next two books as well...<br />

I sat on a panel about the nature of steampunk writing with the lovely <a href="http://ravendane.wordpress.com/">Raven Dane</a> and awesome <a href="http://paxbritanniablog.blogspot.co.uk/">Jonathon Green</a> which was jolly good fun. I saw <a href="http://www.gentlemanrhymer.com/">Mr B</a> the gentleman rhymer play, I helped judge the costume competion with Jonathon and the very talented <a href="http://www.thomastruax.com/welcomeset.html">Mr Thomas Truax</a>. Even <a href="http://www.myspace.com/mcelemental">MC Elemental</a> got me up on stage to sing a song to me, which was very silly indeed.<br />

Another page of Emilly Ladybird dress up dolly fun, this week is a Patriotic ensemble to celebrate the Jubilee, and some other fun stuff. This Steampunk Brittania dress was displayed in all it's actual 3D glory at <a href="http://www.ianvisits.co.uk/blog/2011/06/03/worlds-largest-steampunk-exhibition-visits-london/">Kewbridge Steam Museums Exhibition</a>!<br />
<br />
After a little experimentation, I have also discovered that repositionable stickers are absolutely perfect for creating a changeable costume doll without the need for tabs! This <a href="http://www.avery.co.uk/avery/en_gb/Products/Creative/Films/Decorative-foil_MD3001.htm?N=0&Ns=&refchannel=a5919036e15dc110VgnVCM1000002118140aRCRD">one</a> from Avery is excellent (despite the rather odd sounding name). You get 6 A4 sheets in a pack and it works in a normal inkjet printer.<br />
<br />
You can get your high resolution version of the dresses <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/s/brxshk7qcenht06/Emilly%20Ladybird%20Jema%20Hewitt%20Kit%20Cox%20Paper%20doll%20sheet2%20colour.jpg">here </a>Miss Ladybirdhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06118661566594684763noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8746181512754658279.post-87366266796313738582012-05-29T04:39:00.001-07:002012-05-29T05:21:02.341-07:00Paris Fashions Ahoy!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl6lLPoZCa5ycaqU3ZI30HGUkU0kL8m15zCmRarIftUlKq6cSvqDPZoFcSGh-poSaovaXv2XFr_0YrLbWBCR8HyZR2JENeqayhgZTTYayGJWpHb4kCPU-Dg2v74jn7PHWCJ37CDeheU2XY/s1600/Emilly+Ladybird+Jema+Hewitt+Kit+Cox+Paper+doll+sheet1+colour.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl6lLPoZCa5ycaqU3ZI30HGUkU0kL8m15zCmRarIftUlKq6cSvqDPZoFcSGh-poSaovaXv2XFr_0YrLbWBCR8HyZR2JENeqayhgZTTYayGJWpHb4kCPU-Dg2v74jn7PHWCJ37CDeheU2XY/s320/Emilly+Ladybird+Jema+Hewitt+Kit+Cox+Paper+doll+sheet1+colour.jpg" width="225" /></a>To celebrate the beautiful new look to my journal, I have a special treat, you can now download your very own Emilly Ladybird Dress up doll!<br />

My latest book
has many pictures and projects some of the super things I've seen on my
travels around the Steampunk globe and how to craft them yourself!
We're all terribly excited. It features many of my favourite pieces and
some of my excellent Steampunk friends. We (at Dickens and Rivet) would
love to know what you think!<br />
<br />
If you would like a personally signed copy, just email me! It's available in all bookstores and many online stores including <a href="http://www.northlightshop.com/steampunk-emporium-z8074">here </a><br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span">"This title covers Victorian charm and
steam-powered machinery parts with modern day elements and technology.
Whether a converted steampunk enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre,
this funky and fabulous book is the perfect practical introduction to
the whimsical world of steampunk jewelry. Each of the five themed

charms. This highly visual book is packed with photography and design
elements to give a real flavour of the steampunk process and readers are
taught the beginning-level jewellery and related techniques."</span><br />

<br />
These pieces were all discovered by Miss Emilly Ladybird and Mr Woppit on a recent excursion to Eritraia. Whilst exploring a ruined city under the desert, they came across a race of amazing brass automatons who had crash landed many years ago, whilst exploring the universe.<br />
<br />
Foiling the dastardly attempt of a thief to steal the automatons source of power, (a beautiful purple stone which has the power to warp time itself! ) Miss Ladybird has gone in search of other objects which may be related to the stone.<br />
<br />
They all now reside in safe (ish) hands, although the finding of similar pure silver pieces may be accepted as a commission.<br />

This petite girl had been created out of clockwork and doll parts by a wise and clever toy maker. She lived in a castle far away and no one ever came to visit.<br />
<br />
The clever toy maker had made her all manner of beautiful things, to replace her worn cogs and springs. He always intended to make her some friends when he returned from his long journey. Many centuries went by and the little princess continued to tend her roses and dance in the empty ballroom, till one day a knock on the castle door brought a whole bevy of clockwork girls, all created by the wise toymaker (who for all we know, still roams the world making marvelous mechanical maidens).<br />

<br />
The Radientorum was designed by Sir Charles Darley to provide a consistent calibration of the luminosity of Moon Opals. These fabulously rare gems were brought back by Mr Bedford from the moon in 1890, and in recognition of their unique glowing properties the Radientorum was named.<br />
<div>
<br />
Only 30 of these shimmering gems are in existence, each one cut from the solid piece of opal brought retrived by Bedford. If held to a bright light source and then taken into darkness, the opal will glow with reflected light, exactly as the moon does.<br />
<div>
<br />
Obviously it is because of the high density of opal on the moon that we can see it glowing in the night sky. This mineral diminishes and grows as larger or smaller sections of the moon are recharged by the suns light.<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">It was only when an ancient technical manual called 'The Mutus Liber' was discovered in the attic of a chateaux in Guttenberg that it’s true function became clear.<br /><br />The fine mechanisms made in 1835 by Bartholomew Stevenson accurately displayed the amount of life force contained within an individual. Thus on a young and vigorous individual the reading was high, while often the infirm or elderly would show a low reading, giving rise to the mistaken belief that it could foretell imminent death. It has had some use in the hands of the Harley St practitioners but, perhaps due to the macabre connections it has never really become popular. It should perhaps be renamed a 'Vitalemeter', but the older name has stuck.</span><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRSrj9zKiuG4ZTCJoLJni1Jao0mCa5J6e4LxVpedtDgj3U04JvXXyT27VTgI5Ye_ExlQVbG4JPvy76Gl93sL14IAw0O67rnPSloYfkaHbUjHov7-77CaJLBUCnDPEIRo_wpBOjSxAiFs6l/s1600-h/necrometer-detail.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5263764599600330322" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRSrj9zKiuG4ZTCJoLJni1Jao0mCa5J6e4LxVpedtDgj3U04JvXXyT27VTgI5Ye_ExlQVbG4JPvy76Gl93sL14IAw0O67rnPSloYfkaHbUjHov7-77CaJLBUCnDPEIRo_wpBOjSxAiFs6l/s200/necrometer-detail.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; float: right; height: 144px; margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; width: 200px;" /></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">It was used with much success by Mrs Harker for the discernment of undead who invariably gave a life force reading of zero.
